School is almost out and while the kids are cheering, parents are seeing dollar signs to keep their kids entertained. What are some cheap activities for kids that don’t cost an arm and a leg?
Summer camps are an amazing experience, but get pricey. Water parks and theme parks are a blast, but can put a dent in the budget. And, while grandparents love visits, keeping kids occupied is always a challenge.
For most kids, it’s not about what you do, but about spending time with them. Here are seven ways to keep the kids (and budget) happy:
Go to the movies
Movies have become notoriously expensive. However, many movie theater chains show free or cheap kids’ films on weekday mornings. Skip the movie theater treats by eating at home before you go. Better yet? Have a movie night at home. Pop the popcorn, grab your favorite seat in the house and find a movie you haven’t seen in a while. You might even be able to introduce the kids to one of your favorite “classics.”
Explore the great outdoors
Have bike will travel! Go on family walks or bike rides to explore nearby trails. We are lucky to live near trails and hiking areas that offer free access.
Have an outdoor picnic
Eating PB&J doesn’t sound like too much fun at the kitchen table. Throw a blanket outside and add some sun tea and those sandwiches taste magical. Throw in a game of Frisbee or tag and an ordinary lunch is transformed.
Let the kids cook
What’s for dinner? Let them decide. Help set a budget, plan the meal and even go shopping. Depending on their age, they could be a great sous chef or take on the dinner by themselves. You never know. You might help inspire a culinary mastermind.
Explore the library
Whether it’s story times, movies or other activities for kids and teens during the summer, the library is a great resource. Not only can you borrow books for free, you can check out movies and even download music. The library also offers free air conditioning – enough said.
Hanging out with sand between your toes doesn’t have to be a big production. Grab a beach towel, some ice cold water in a re-usable bottle (if you plan for it, freeze the water ahead of time to keep it from getting warm so soon), your sun block and go.
Go on a scavenger hunt
This one may take some time to plan – but it can offer hours of amusement. Whether you explore downtown or just the backyard, let kids take pictures of their finds. Don’t have time for a full-on hunt? A classic, “I spy” game can let parents nimbly find nearby items without the kids being too far from eyeshot.
