Checking Account FAQs

A checking account is often the first account you will open. Whether it’s an upgrade from a piggy bank, the ability to cash checks, or to set up a direct deposit from your job, there are plenty of frequently asked questions around checking accounts. Even if you’ve had a checking account for a while, these quick references may be useful.

Where's the checking account number on my check?

The second series of numbers on your check is your account number. The set of numbers right after that is your check number and should be the same as the number in the upper right-hand corner of the check.

Does bad credit affect my checking account?

Bad credit, or a low credit score, doesn’t affect your checking account. Bad credit could impact your loan rates if you need a car, credit card or if you decide to buy a home. It’s always a good idea to find ways to improve your credit.

However, a series of checks with non-sufficient funds (NSF) and bounced checks, is another story. While this isn’t reported on your credit score, it could be reported to ChexSystems if it goes unpaid and turned into collections.

ChexSystems identifies people who present a risk because of mishandling funds. If there is a pattern of unpaid checks and attempts to open a new account at another financial institution, this could affect your eligibility.

This doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t open a Numerica account. Our team members have a variety of options to work with our members in order to help them establish or rebuild credit.

What happens when my checking account goes negative?

We get it. Life moves – sometimes a bit too quickly, and the funds you expect to be in the account may not be.

If a checking account goes negative, you could be charged an overdraft fee of $30 for each overdrawn transaction. This Standard Protection is provided for every member and covers checks, in-person withdrawals, automatic bill payments and electronic transactions.

Courtesy Pay is another service you can enroll in to cover ATM and debit transactions. In order to avoid collection efforts, overdrafts must be paid by the 29th day negative. A member must also be in good standing. There is a $30 fee for each item paid, up to five per day.

Members can also opt-in for Transfer Protection. This allows an account to be linked to a Numerica savings account used to cover the overdraft. (As long as the funds are available.) Transfer Protection is offered for free twice per month with any additional transfers being $5 each. Make sure you are already enrolled in this service in the event of NSF. To enroll, simply call 800.433.1837.

Can a personal checking account be used for business?

While it seems like this would be an easy solution, you should never combine your personal and business accounts. Using your personal account for your business transactions can affect your legal liability.

One of the first steps after getting a business license, even a home business, should be to open its own account. Did you know that Numerica has a full line of business products They include several awesome business checking account options.

How do I know which checking account is the best choice for me?

Numerica has two different free checking accounts: Free Checking and Sequel Checking. With Sequel Checking, there is no minimum balance after opening your account nor are there monthly fees. Both accounts let you customize your debit card with a Numerica motif, Zags, or EWU artwork.

How do I get my debit card for my checking account?

When you opened your checking account, you should have received a debit card either in the mail or at the branch. If you have misplaced your debit card, you can activate Card Freeze until you can find it or until you replace it with a new card, printed right at the branch. If you believe your card is lost or stolen, please contact us immediately at 800.433.1837 so we can permanently block the card and send you a new card with a new number.
