Bringing families together to talk about money

On November 19, Numerica Credit Union hosted Talking Money with Your Teen at our Wenatchee branch. Local parents and teens joined us for an evening focused on practical, honest money conversations at home.

Why this conversation matters

Money can be a tough topic to bring up, and teens are already building lifelong habits.  This event helped families start talking about saving, spending, credit, and long-term goals in a way that felt doable.

Inside the conversation

The highlight of the night was a parent and teen panel featuring Numerica employees Olga Camarena and Greg Olson, alongside their teenage sons. With guided questions and live audience participation, families heard real experiences about what works, what gets awkward, and what helps teens feel more confident.

Families asked about

  • How parents can talk about money without making it seem like a lecture
  • Saving for college, cars, and future goals
  • Banking options for teens
  • Investment basics and where to begin
  • Helping teens balance saving with spending and delayed gratification

What stood out was the openness of both parents and teens. Teens asked thoughtful questions about investing, earning money before having a full-time job, and preparing for life after high school. Several parents shared that they had never had a real money conversation with their teens until this event.

What attendees said

Thank you so much for caring about our community and investing in our youth. My son’s first words after we left the event were "That was so awesome and informative!"  Followed shortly by, "I can be a millionaire!"

What we learned

  • Families want real conversations, not lectures. The panel format resonated, showing that real stories build trust.
  • Teens are curious about money. Questions about investing, credit, and long-term planning came up repeatedly, showing a desire to learn.
  • Parents want help starting the conversation. Many shared that money talks feel easier when supported by their financial institution.

Keep the conversation going. We plan to bring Talking Money with Your Teen to more communities we serve. In the meantime, you can explore our youth checking and savings accounts and financial education tools, and keep an eye out for upcoming events.
